WOODBRASS

Woodbrass celebrates music ! A visual and sonic symphony to pay homage to musical practice.

For Woodbrass’ latest film, we composed and produced an original score and festive sound design. The result was a colorful tribute to music. An opportunity for us to merge our passion for music with our expertise as sound designers.

Context

Woodbrass, the French maestro of musical instrument sales, has orchestrated a great initiative for the “Fête de la Musique”. Woodbrass uses a colorful animated film to celebrate the viral joy of playing music. The conductor’s baton was entrusted to Blackmeal, a motion design studio based in Nantes. The film is a mosaic of colorful sequences, each featuring a different instrument, in a ballet of musical genres.

In the midst of this visual and sound mashup, each instrument becomes the protagonist of a unique tableau. Each scene has its own graphic style. Blackmeal explores a wide range of different techniques, from live action to animation, stop motion and 3D. The result is a colorful eclectic mix that reflects the diversity and richness of music.

Solution

For this musical project, we decided to play as many instruments as possible live in our studios. Giving prominence to acoustic timbres, and having the anthem sung by an in-house choir.

Éric recorded several of his guitars : the electric with a 1961 Gibson Lespaul custom, the acoustic with a Martin D45. A Fender jazz bass is played with a pick. He added flute, and took care of directing and recording the family choir.

Maurin recorded the drums, a Ludwig Classic Maple from the 60s, as well as the Wurlitzer and Juno parts.

This orchestrated abundance of different timbres expresses the diversity and richness of the music. Each sequence is an expression of a particular musical style, which we have explored by trying to get as close as possible to the sound of each genre of music featured in the video.
